Topic 2: Introduction to Nuclear Energy – Step 7
Chapter 2 Critical Thinking
In nuclear reactors, U-235 undergoes induced fission by being bombarded with neutrons. For producing nuclear energy, the uranium in the reactor contains only 3-5% U-235, and a much higher percentage of U-238. (Remember, natural uranium is more than 99% U-238). If U-238 also absorbs or captures neutrons in the reactor, how might this affect the fission process?
